If that is what they did then the plane would have no doubt had a lot of momentum or a lot of mass. I figure it was probably both but that would be one heck of a plane. <br /><br />I personally use a 5/8" shoulder plane set with the blade every so slightly biased to one side and work across the end grain without leaving tracks. I lightly dampen the end grain as well to make it a bit easier. How do you get such pristine end grain fin...Caleb, <br />How do you get such pristine end grain finish on beech plane blanks, (ends)? If you use a power tool method, have any idea of a good traditional method for squaring and finishing large size end grain? I was trying to think how sandusky or other plane factories cleaned to perfection thousands of ends, some old treatises just say, (square and shoot the blank) so there is some HUGE strike block plane with a capacity of 3ish inches?!!!
